Indoor vs Outdoor materials

When it comes to furnishing a hospitality space — whether a restaurant, café, hotel, or bar — one of the most important decisions is choosing the right furniture for your environment. Indoor and outdoor hospitality furniture may look similar in style, but they’re engineered very differently. Understanding how materials perform under different conditions will not only extend the lifespan of your investment but also protect the overall guest experience and your brand image

What's the difference?

The most significant distinction between indoor and outdoor hospitality furniture lies in their purpose and material composition

Indoor furniture is designed for controlled environments — stable temperatures, low humidity, and no direct exposure to UV rays or rain. Comfort, aesthetics, and fine finishes are often prioritised over weather resistance.

Outdoor furniture, on the other hand, must withstand harsh environmental factors such as rain, sun, wind, and temperature fluctuations. This means it’s made from weather-resistant materials and treated finishes to prevent corrosion, fading, and warping.

Different materials behave in very different ways depending on where they’re used. Choosing the wrong one can lead to costly replacements or damage within months.

Metals

Outdoor furniture often features metals such as aluminium or stainless steel because they’re resistant to rust and corrosion. Aluminium doesn’t rust, making it ideal for coastal or humid environments, while stainless steel offers a sleek, modern look with long-lasting strength.

In contrast, indoor metal furniture might not be treated with protective coatings. If placed outside, it can quickly oxidise, corrode, or discolour due to exposure to moisture and UV rays.

Wood

Wood brings warmth and natural beauty to hospitality spaces, but it reacts differently to environmental conditions.

Indoor woods, such as oak, ash, or walnut, are perfect for dining areas or lounges but can absorb moisture when exposed to rain or humidity. This can lead to warping, bowing, and cracking over time.

Outdoor woods, such as teak, acacia, or treated eucalyptus, are far more resilient. Teak, for example, contains natural oils that protect it from moisture and pests, making it a premium choice for outdoor use.

Using indoor wood furniture outdoors, even temporarily, can cause irreversible damage — particularly when surfaces swell, joints weaken, or finishes peel. We do not recommend using your indoor furniture outdoors for this reason. It will also invalidate any warranty.

Plastics and synthetics

High-quality synthetic materials, like polypropylene or resin wicker, are popular in outdoor hospitality environments for their durability and low maintenance. They resist fading, cracking, and moisture damage.
Indoor plastics may not include UV stabilisers, causing them to brittle and fade when used outdoors.

Upholstery and Fabrics

Outdoor hospitality seating often uses waterproof, UV-resistant fabrics like Sunbrella® or olefin. These fabrics resist mould, mildew, and fading. Indoor upholstery, however, is designed for comfort and texture — think velvet, linen, or leather — and can deteriorate rapidly if exposed to sun or rain.

Aside from materials, design intent also differs between indoor and outdoor furniture:

Indoor designs often prioritise aesthetics and comfort, featuring plush cushions, delicate finishes, and intricate detailing.

Outdoor designs balance style and functionality, with streamlined silhouettes that shed water easily, ventilated seat backs, and finishes that resist UV exposure.

For hospitality settings, this means outdoor pieces are often heavier, stackable, and easy to clean, whereas indoor pieces may include more luxurious, delicate finishes that complement interior design themes.

When deciding between indoor and outdoor furniture for your hospitality venue, consider:

Location – Will it be exposed to sunlight, moisture, or sea air?

Traffic – Will guests be moving furniture often (e.g., in cafés or event spaces)?

Aesthetic – Do you want a consistent look between indoor and outdoor areas?

Maintenance – Can your staff easily care for and protect the materials?

Investing in purpose-built furniture ensures both durability and guest comfort, helping your business maintain a professional image season after season.
